Hike to Cathedral Tree

The Astoria area has so much to do and see. There are hikes to take, forts to visit and beaches to explore. Hiking to Cathedral Tree is often overlooked, but a wonderful hike to take. Cathedral Tree is a 300 something year old tree that sits in the forest that borders the Astoria Column memorial. Parking at the memorial cost $5. Keep your pass because it’s good for the whole year! A quick walk across the parking lot will get to you the trailhead.

The Hike to Cathedral Tree

The trail leads you into a quiet, lush forest. The trail slopes downward for much of the trek and can be quick muddy and slick at times. Wildflowers can be seen along the trail seasonally. Benches are scattered throughout the trail. There are several trails connecting with the trail to Cathedral Tree. Signs will keep you on the right path. As you approach Cathedral Tree you walk down a set of stairs that give you a nice view of the 300 year old tree. Cathedral Tree has a large opening at its base that is fun for kids to walk through. There is a bench facing the tree that you can sit and rest before starting your trek back.

The Essentials

Bring a good set of hiking boots: The trail was quite slick when we hiked and we had a few slips while walking down areas with lots of roots.

Rain jacket: Anywhere in the PNW requires a rain jacket on the regular.

Water: Stay hydrated!

Extra Set of Clothes: Bring extra clothes to change into after your hike, especially if you have kiddos. Slipping and sliding is definitely likely.

Nearby Activites

Astoria Column: Climb the stairs to the top of the column to see a 360 view of Astoria!

Lewis and Clarke National Historical Site: Here is a replica of Fort Clatsop. Explore the fort as well as the canoe launch site.

Fort Steven’s State Park: Check out the Peter Iredale Shipwreck and various military battery sites. You are likely to see some elk hanging out as well!
