The Best Sunrise on Tamarindo Beach

There is something magical about sunrises. The temperature is cooler, there are fewer people around and you can watch Mother Nature wake up in all her morning glory. I’ve always thought sunrises to be peaceful. Tamarindo was the first weekend getaway of our semester abroad. At the time I was stressed because I didn’t get into the class I needed in order to complete my Spanish degree, my personal life was a mess and I was still getting used to the culture that was completed different than the one I had grown up with. Little did I know I was going through a bit of culture shock at that  point in time. So when my friend asked me if I wanted to get up for sunrise the last morning we were in Tamarindo, I eagerly said yes.

My alarm went off at 5am. Rolling out of bed I put on a pair of shorts and a T-shirt, grabbing my camera. The beach was right across the street from our hotel. We took off our shoes when we reached the sand and started walking. The sun was beginning to light up the beach with magnificent pinks and purples. Some boats floated just off shore, their occupants completely unaware of the beauty unfolding in front of them as they slept.

We strolled down the beach collecting shells and telling each other about ourselves. We were still getting to know each other since we had only arrived in Costa Rica two weeks before. I took lots of photos. The scene in front of me was so beautiful I could hardly put down my camera for more than a minute. This was one of the nicest beaches I had ever gone to.

When the sun had risen over the trees we stumbled upon some howler monkeys and an iguana. They were enjoying the cool of the morning as well before it got extremely humid. After about an hour we headed back for breakfast.

This was the first time since arriving to Costa Rica that I felt calm. The walk was much needed. It’s amazing how taking time to enjoy the little things can quiet a loud mind.

  1. Hi, really beautiful photos. Yes sunrise is magical and I love to wake up early to see a town wake up or to experience the peace of a place. My best time is when I am home in Tahiti, I will paddle board at 5.50am and look at the sun rising. It is magical, the sea is so calm but the fish, turtles and sharks are all awake and active. It is awesome. Have a great day!

  2. Aw this is great! Your photos are beautiful, it must’ve been even more incredible in person. I love going for a long hike when I have a lot on my mind. Most of the time I don’t even realize I’m stressed until I get out on the trail and fall deep into my thoughts. Thanks for sharing this amazing story!
