RMNP: Hike to The Loch
Glacier Gorge is an extraordinary area to hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. There are amazing lakes, epic mountain views and scenic glaciers surrounding the area. Our favorite hikes in RMNP have been in this area and one is to the Loch. The Loch is a large lake with mountain views all around it. It is a 6.2 mile (10km) out and back, moderate hike. This hike has a lot to see and is great for families.
To start your hike park in the Glacier Gorge Parking lot. If the parking lot is full continue on to the Bear Lake parking lot and either take the shuttle to Glacier Gorge parking lot or hike the 0.4 mile connecting trail. From the Glacier Gorge parking lot it is a 0.8 mile hike to the first stop, Alberta Falls. Alberta Falls is a 30-foot water fall with lots of climbing rocks around it. It’s a great stop for a snack before continuing on up the trail.
From Alberta Falls it is 2.3 miles to The Loch. The trek is far from boring. We hiked through beautiful aspens and walked along Glacier Creek. This trail seriously looks like a scene out of Narnia. There are two places where the trail split and go to Long’s Peak Ranger Station and Mills Lake. Mills Lake would be another lake close by to visit on your way back.
As you approach The Loch the trees open up and the fabulous lake and snow-covered mountains will come into view. the trail splits off around the lake to the right and left. Although there are plenty of spots to spread out and explore, we recommend going left when you get to there. The trail to the left is less popular due to all the hikers going right towards Sky Pond and Andrew’s Glacier.
During our time at The Loch we encountered kayakers, paddle boarders and fishermen/women. The surroundings are incredibly photogenic and we found ourselves stopping every few yards to enjoy the view. Taylor’s Peak is visible from one side of the lake as well as a glacier. After we took tons of pictures, we continued our hike to Andrew’s Glacier and Sky Pond. Both are considered strenuous hikes. We were lucky enough to enjoy views of The Loch during the early morning and sunset. So of course, on our way back we took lots more pictures. We parked in Bear Lake parking lot so we decided to hike back to Glacier Gorge parking lot and took the shuttle to our car. We really hope you chose this hike during your next trip to Rocky Mountain National Park. Happy hiking!
